Escaping to mountains and lakes is up there on the romance scale when looking to make valentine's day special for your other half. Believe it or not, the Welsh are very romantic at this time of year and actually celebrate two days of love; St Dwynwen's day, the Welsh St of lovers is celebrated on the 25th Jan. To give you a bit of inspiration, here are our favourite things to do on Valentine's Day Snowdonia....
This is the resting place of St Dwynwen and where you'll find the well where celtic folklore says that when two lovers look down the well where sacred fish dwell, if the fish are moving, it is a sign of a faithful husband. The island is just off Newborough Beach and only accessible with the tide. Newborough forest and beach offer the most beautiful walks and certainly a place to go with your loved one.
The Swallow Falls are the largest continuous waterfalls in Wales and where you make wishes when you throw a coin from the look out bridge. Based on the outskirts of Betws Y Coed, they really are worth a visit as they are simply beautiful and the sound of the water crashing down in wonderful. A little further out on the other side of the town, is Fairy Glen, a gorge through the river, which can only be described as magical. Back into Betws Y Coed where you'll find a good selection of cafes, restaurants to relax in for a lovely meal for two.
This magical italian style village on the North Wales coast is really wonderful and one of my favourite places to visit. Colourful buildings and beautiful gardens, you can spend a day walking around. There are plenty of places to eat, both cafe style and fine dining and if you want to stay for the whole weekend, you can stay in one of their self accomodation houses or at the hotel - plenty of options and certainly a memorable place to stay - many a celeb flock here when on a visit to North Wales.
If you are looking for a bit of adventure in your weekend away, Coed Y Brenin is mountain biking heaven and offers 8 trails for all ages and abilities. Yr Avon, is a green trail which takes you through the forest, past waterfalls and a gold mine. Lovely easy to ride tracks with stunning scenery making it very romantic. There is a cafe on site to grab something eat, or you could head into Dolgellau for a more special dinner for two.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay for a romantic weekend away in North Wales, then Dioni Holiday cottages has something for everyone. From remote cottages with log fires and farm stays, to those by the beach and those in the mountains. All beautifully finished with everything you'll need for a wonderful weekend away.
