THINGS TO DO WHEN IT RAINS IN SNOWDONIA

Updated: Sep 21, 2018

I've just come in from a very wet dog walk and passed lots of disgruntled parents with kids going for hot chocolates wandering what to do... But there is no need to panic on a rainy day in Snowdonia as there is lots to do even when it's raining. To give you a helping hand today, here are some great things to do when it rains in Snowdonia:

1 - BENDIGEDIG | BARMOUTH

A soft play centre in the heart of Barmouth. Suitable for ages up to 12, this is a great place to go for a couple of hours to burn off some energy and then have some lunch. They have a full lunch menu (both hot and cold) and plenty of seating. If there is a group of you, they also offer pottery painting in the basement, however, you do need to book this in advance.

2 - LLANFAIR SLATE CAVERNS AND FARM PARK | LLANFAIR

A fab underground experience for younger people. There is a cafe and gift shop next to the caverns along with a Farm Park where you'll find baby animals, a huge sand pit and a whole load more to do - most of the activities are indoors too so you can escape the rain!

3 - VISIT A CASTLE | HARLECH | CAERNARFON | CONWY | CRICCIETH

A great place to go and while away an afternoon and if you're in the mood to make a day of it, why not do two! Steeped in history, you cannot fail to enjoy a visit to these places. Older kids will enjoy the larger ones more; Caernarfon and Conwy.

4 - CLIMBING | HARLECH | CAERNARFON

There are a couple of great climbing walls in the area. Harlech and Ardudwy Liesure Centre has a climbing wall and bouldering section alongside a swimming pool where they run 'total wipeout' sessions during the holidays. The Beacon in Caernarfon is an indoor climbing wall and bouldering.

5 - GLASFRYN PARC | PWLLHELI

There is everything on offer here. Most notable for their wake boarding, they do lots of other water-sports like SUP, Caenoening, kayaking. They also have bowling, quad biking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, go-karting.... this is a really great place to go for a day out and they cater for so many different things whatever the weather as well as a big range of ages.

6 - SNOWDONIA ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

You can't beat the rain and so join it! How about a day gorge walking or canyoning - this is so much fun what ever the weather and sometimes even better in the rain as the rivers are fuller. Snowdonia Adventure Activities are great providers for these activities.

7 - SURF SNOWDONIA

Surf Snowdonia is an award winning surf lagoon set in the Snowdonia mountains! Perfect waves continuously created in the lagoon. If you are learning you will be up in no time at all and if you can surf and want to improve, this is the perfect place to come. There is also a splash and crash section, a water climbing wall, a soft play centre and a newly opened skate park. There is an on site cafe and restaurant that offer really lovely food. It's good here, really, really good!

8 - ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN

Electric Mountain is a hydro power station built within a mountain - it was designed and built inside the mountain so as to not affect the surrounding landscape. A fascinating guided tour around how a power plant of this size operates to supply energy to the national grid.

9 - RIDE ON A STEAM TRAIN

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highlands railway steam train runs from Caernarfon to Blaenau Ffestiniog over the Snowdonia mountains and by the lakes - it is a truly spectacular trip. There are lots of stops and so you can get on and off depending on where you are based i.e. you don't have to do the whole trip from Caernarfon to Blaenau!

10 - GO SWIMMING IN THE SEA OR THE LAKES!

Cheap and cheerful! It's raining, not freezing cold. So you could just embrace the rain, put on a wetsuit and either go swimming in the sea or the lakes - I love both!
